Lesson Theme for January The Great Kindness Challenge
This month is filled with activities!!! Each Student will receive a Kindness Scroll~ a small message that, hopefully, makes them feel happy and/or inspires them to be kind. My bulletin board is covered in envelopes that are open. Inside each is a slip of paper with a kindness quote from a famous person or a kind thought or suggested action ~ since Kindness is an action. I ask that students only take one slip per day~ and that they truly complete the kindness before they take another slip. During 5 different lunch times, the students have the opportunity to make Valentine's Day cards for Veterans who are in the VA hospitals in the area. During the classroom counseling lesson times we review what we did last year and the follow up~ (we made handprints of kindness, which then went on to help break the Guinness Book of World Records~ please ask your child about ti..it is too cool!!) We then watch 2 videos~ one is the Liberty Mutual Pay it Forward commercials you may have seen...another is similar in nature. we talk about the videos..and how one simple act of kindness can start an amazing chain reaction of kindness. The students then start a "gift of Kindness" ~ I wont go into too many details , as I hope you may get one!!! Finally I hand out the Great Kindness Challenge worksheets. I do let students know that some of the challenges require help and if that particular act is not possible, they can write their own in. I have already seen so many random acts of kindness~ I hope you have seen an increase as well!
Feel free to ask your child (or me ) about the lesson.
